A track day is one of the best experiences a car enthusiast can have. But the circuit is an unforgiving environment. Sustained high speeds, repeated hard braking, and constant lateral loading expose weaknesses that daily driving never reveals. Preparation is everything, and skipping it can turn an amazing day into an expensive recovery job.
Start with the basics. Tyres must be in excellent condition with plenty of tread depth and no sidewall damage. Check pressures cold before you set off, and bring a pump and pressure gauge to adjust at the circuit. Most drivers drop a few PSI to prevent overheating and improve grip, but the exact figure depends on the tyre and the car.
Brakes are the next priority. Standard pads and fluid are not designed for sustained track temperatures. If you are serious about track work, consider upgrading to high-temperature brake fluid with a higher boiling point and performance-oriented pads that resist fade. At minimum, inspect the discs for cracks or lip formation, check pad thickness, and bleed the system to remove any moisture.
Fluids need attention too. Engine oil should be fresh and at the correct level. Coolant must be topped up with the right concentration of antifreeze, which also raises the boiling point. Check the gearbox and differential oils if they are due. Track work accelerates degradation, and fresh fluids are cheap insurance against expensive failures.
Suspension and alignment should be checked and optimised for track use. Road-oriented alignment settings often result in excessive tyre wear and vague handling on circuit. A dedicated track alignment with increased negative camber, reduced toe, and firmer damper settings transforms grip and feedback. Just remember to return to road settings afterwards if the car is driven daily.
Finally, strip weight and secure loose items. Remove everything from the cabin and boot that is not essential. Check that the battery is properly secured, wheel nuts are torqued correctly, and all undertray fasteners are tight. Bring spare tyres if you have them, a basic tool kit, and a fire extinguisher.
At Wallace Performance, we offer pre-track preparation packages that cover all of this and more. We inspect, adjust, and upgrade everything that matters, so you can focus on enjoying the circuit. Book your prep session at least a week before your track day to allow time for any parts that need ordering.
